friday march 03, 2006 download. The post-punk/electro/disco/new-wave/rocksendupshow
Download Show Here (72 minutes, all music no talking)
(Playlist for the show is below, I've written out all the talking so you just have to listen and enjoy)
This show walks a fine line between modern retro obsession and vintage originals. We start off in 1986 at the scene of a horrific car crash involving a frenchman named Kavinsky, a Ferrari and the zombie that emerged 20 years later to get vengence. We follow Kavinsky's nod to Jan Hammer with some pixel age doomsdayery courtesy of Kraftwerk's "Computer World" followed by more 80's doom shit with Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon together as Time Zone rapping on "World Destruction."
Ying Yang Twins lighten the mood for the hip-hop section (if you could call the prior mood heavy, I was thinking it was some combination of corny and awesome) with Xpress 2's europeansuperclub remix of "Shake", which I mixed some classic Yaz into the end, followed by DJ Ayers' delightful rework of the Talking Heads' classic "Sugar on My Tongue" and Modern Romance's "Nothing Ever Turns out Like You Planned / Queen of the Rapping Scene" (check the french accent, it's like Uffie in 82 with more treble and without the sex).
Chicken Lips nod to 70's vocalists with "White Dwarf" and Waves follow with some vintage, possibly french-canadian electro disco on the track "Touch". I don't know, Rollo is a canadian label, and the singer's got a french accent, so I just assume she's from Quebec perhaps. Does anybody else know about this band?
Vortex followed Waves (coincidence?) with "Black Box Disco" which is an original soundtrack piece from an old new york indie film called either Vortex or Grey Death starring Lydia Lunch. I think the film was called Grey Death for some reason, but the Soul Jazz liner notes call the film Vortex, but I think that Vortex was the name of the free-jazz / electronic outfit that worked on the soundtrack. Maybe you, dear listener can deduce this mystery and we can get to the truth. Either way, it's a great track.
Speaking of New York indie films with soundtracks, here's one for you. Guy Richards Smit writes and directs films, paints satirical watercolors and plays a fictious character in the art-rock band Maxi Geil! & Playcolt that scores the soundtracks for his films. Maxi Geil! & Playcolt released a beautiful picture disc 12inch vinyl that features this track, "Making Love In The Sunshine" as well as "That's How The Story Goes." I would strongly recommend you go get this record if you are at all interested in vinyl and music. It's available from Roebling Hall in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) at 390 Whyte Ave, and in the Chelsea area in Manhattan at 606 West 26th Street. Yeah if you happen to read this and you are on foot in New York looking for collectible vinyl... And while you're in New York Maxi Geil! will be doing a show on March 12 at the Northsix in Brooklyn. Also, Maxi Geil! & PlayColt is about to go back in the studio to record their second full length LP for FRED [LABEL] LTD (London) with producers Josh Hager (the Elevator Drops, Garvy J, The Rentals) and Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Hole, etc.)
Next up, Joe Jackson with "Sunday Papers"... While he was poppy-punk before he was poopy-pop, Anthrax even covered him (remember "Got The Time?)! And my favorite new rediscovery is Pere Ubu's "Pa (Ubu) Dance Party" from 1979's Dub Housing - absolutely brilliant post-punk track. The B-52's fill in the recognizable nostalgia section here with "Dance This Mess Around" from their 1979 self titled LP.
boogeRS from France come in with their anti-image electro/punk super-hit "Ashtray" which will be released soon on vinyl from gangofyouth.
Were almost done.
Next up is a collaboration between Soul Jazz post-punk/disco poster-boys Arthur Russell and Nicky Siano operating together as Felix. Joakim follows with his new single "I Wish You Were Gone" which is like house or disco, but it's also got this really hooky no-wave guitar riff which I really like. This song is just really good. And this is followed by Cut Copy, a long time favorite here with "Going Nowhere" (finally finally available on vinyl!!!)
And Sebastien Tellier, another frenchman finishes out the show with his delightful pop song "Broadway." Is it just me or does he sound exactly like Paul MacCartney here. And the trumpet bit sounds a lot like something out of the Yellow Submarine. Or like the bit out of "penny lane" Which is really fantastic since I am a huge MacCartney fan and I like subtle references to psychedelic music anytime.

best of 2005 punkrockdiscomix show finally up now
Click here to download 75 minutes, mp3
Alright, stop me if you've heard this one before, but this show is finally up to downlload now. This program originally aired back on january 6th and featured selections of my favorite "dance" oriented singles that ranged from campy french house (shoot the model) to blistering american rock (LCD soundsystems cover of Harry Nilsson's "Jump into the Fire"). As usual with these things I had to re-record the mix at home cause of technical difficulties at the station. This works for you though cause the sound is way better, and it's just a continuous mix without any of my talking, or PSA's. Although I think my on-air mixing was better, aside from Mainline's "black honey" record that that took the brunt of a new-years eve baby-duck attack and didn't play originally on air too well. It took a while to clean the wine off that record, but then sometimes the on-air problems are charming. Anyhow, time to exorcise these songs from the radio show's repertoire once and for all.
